Tuesday, December 31

Ah. Almost time for a new year. Time for January, one of my favorite times of the year. I wonder about why I love January so much, but I think it is pretty simple. I love space. Open space. Empty square upon empty square on my calendar. I'm not a person who loves busy. Busy sort of makes me feel crazy. I like a little margin in my life. Room to wiggle and think. I think this love of space translates to my photos as well, but I never really made the connection until today:

I don't really have many big changes I want to make this next year, not any that I have committed into writing or anything. I think that everything I am yearning for can be summed up with finding a little space. It is so hard to do. Starting this last fall my life felt so full, good, but really full. I got carried away by the momentum of life in so many things that I didn't get a chance to think about what I was doing, or why I was doing it. Insert me feeling crazy here. Not bad exactly, just crazy.

So, here's to space. And being intentional in finding it. Happy 2014 everyone!

**Oh! Am I going to try again with my 365 photo project? I honestly don't know yet. I lost track of this year around November, and can't really count it finished. Sad, I know! November! So, maybe I will keep trying to take pictures again everyday just in case I want to do it? Who knows!**

Wednesday, December 18

Just popping in for a quick hello. (Waves.)

If you visit here often, you know how much I love my blue jars. For Christmas I added some lights and greenery. Ah. Makes me so happy:

Hope December is treating you well…Christmas is almost here!

a little december

Hello December. What happened to November? If you are here, I commend your faith in me. Faith that eventually, if you checked back enough times, I would post something new. Today is the day!

Here's a little December for you:

Since when did I have a boy that looks so old? My goodness. All grown up.

So, what happened to all the November photos, you ask? Well, they are on my computer, waiting to be sorted and edited. This project was so much easier at the beginning of the year when I was more diligent about sorting and editing a couple days at a time. November was probably the worst month for me and my daily pictures. I think I missed maybe three or four days. Bummer. I think I will still assign the missing days photos just so I can make it through the year. I hate to give up so close to the end!

the rest of October

Rest as in remaining, not laying down type rest. Ha!

So, in the middle of October Cora decided to cut her hair. Just when I was getting good at French braids. Good thing for her, short hair suits her personality. After the initial cut, we went in to the beauty shop for a new look. Thanks a million, Carissa.

In our backyard we have a maple tree that always (now, when I say always, I mean the for years we have lived here) turns bright yellow. This year it was more orange. I thought a tree would always turn the same color. Something to research.

Sunset at home.

In October, I was so busy with professional photo work that my own personal pictures suffered a bit. I think I missed taking more daily pictures in October than any of the other months combined! So sad. So, instead of throwing up my hands and considering 2013 to be another year where my photo-a-day efforts fell short, I decided to simply fill in photos from other days. Cheating? Yes. Are there any official rules to this project. No. Project saved!

Carissa and her girls came over for a photo session one Sunday. Her girls were not too much into getting their photos taken because they knew my kids were right inside the house ready to play. Also ready to watch Tom and Jerry.

Hot chocolate days.

An orchard visit.

We had a pumpkin painting party. Poor Max. He is often the only boy, and you can see in this photo how he feels lots of times being around lots of younger girls!

New shoes.

Another forgotten day. Pumpkins to the rescue.

My college friend Lindsay is expecting her first child very soon, and I went to her shower last month. So exciting and fun. She is surrounded by a super talented group of friends. One of these friends made the cutest milk bottle favors for everyone that attended the shower. Adorable and awesome. Mine is happily perched on my kitchen window sill.

Church shoes.

Before one of my photo sessions last month Max "helped" me test my light, etc. Love him.

Baby toes.

Her first ponytail. It didn't last long!

On Halloween I didn't get a single photo of my kids in their costumes. We did put our costumes back on a few days later, but I missed the actual day. We were having some weird weather that day and my body felt like I was in fight or flight stage all day long. I wish I was kidding. Sigh.

Thank you for checking out all my pictures again! I am feeling better about November's photos...hopefully I don't miss quite as many!

time elapses...

Time elapses and suddenly October is over. This past month was busy. Crazy busy! When that happens my little blog always gets pushed to the back burner. This juggling act of life and time management never seems to get any easier!

I can see the end of my 365 project coming closer. My organization and my zeal have waned slightly, but I am determined to finish and have (almost) every day of 2013 photographed. When it is all said and done, each day will have a photo. Probably 95% of those photos will have been taken on the "right" day, but some will be wiggled around a little bit. I am wondering if I will do another 365 project next year. I am undecided at this point!

Max is away at school all day, so it is getting harder to capture moments of him. He notices. It makes me feel happy that he still wants to be in my pictures.

One day the kids wanted to have an indoor tea party. A fancy one with a table cloth and real dishes. It takes an effort on my part to embrace these things they do. I have to try really hard to let them just make a mess, and on this particular day spill water all over my quilt. It is hard, but worth it.

Ok. Photographer fail. On the 5th of October Andrew and I went to a fancy auction gala. Black tie gala. New dress gala. What you will see next is the best thing I got. In the near dark. With my phone. Next time.

Cute girl, crooked picture! (Or is it just the camera angle?)

More apples with friends!

Cora's leaf boquet:

The kids are really into Peppa Pig right now. It is the cutest little cartoon ever. All of the characters have British accents!

I really think she might be my artist,

and a little mommy at heart.

Cousins. If we had asked them to pose like this, it never would have happened. Photos like this feel like gifts to me!

I totally forgot to take a photo for the 13th of October, so I just went through and pulled one from another day. Ada in the garden, throwing dirt.

Then, we cook.

Thanks for stopping by...I am determined to keep stirring this blog on the back burner!

just one for now

I have an entire list beside me of every daily photo I've taken in October so far. I've done well. Most of them are edited. I am only sharing one today because the 5th of October is currently trapped on my phone, and so the long list will wait until that photo is retrieved. I just know you love my long excuses and explanations.

Here's the first of October for you. Sisters:

Monday, October 14

I know I promised an update of daily photos today, but that was before my friend Lindsay gave me a Liebster Award!

What is the Liebster Award, you ask? Liebster is a German word meaning "dearest". Basically it is a fun way for bloggers (with small, less than 200 subscriber blogs) to network with one another and for readers to discover other blogs. Fun! Thank you Lindsay for passing this award on to me. Since I have known you, you have always been my biggest cheerleader, so genuinely rooting for me. Thank you! If you haven't already checked out Lindsay's blog, you should! You will get a peek into her decorating brain, and get a dose of her humor too. Love her blog!

So, to participate I just needed to answer some fun questions and pass on the award to someone else. So, get your coffee and have fun learning some random things about me!

1. I started blogging because...

Way back in 2006 I went to a church conference and attended a breakout type session about blogs. I didn't even really know what a blog was! Our pastor had a blog, and I was really just intrigued by the idea. I have always enjoyed writing, and thought it would be fun. I started writing here and posting pictures since 2007. So, I've been blogging for about six years now! Before I had kids! That is just crazy.

2. I'm currently reading...

Two books: While We Were Watching Downton Abbey. I know! Just a little something to tide me over until January when season 4 airs in the US. Soul Shift. Just started it. Very good.

Here's a little fact about me: I have a bit of a book problem. Like I continue to buy them and check them out from the library knowing that I don't have much time to read them. You should see the stack on my bedside table! I have always loved books. I would rather buy books than clothes. When I was younger (like little girl) I used to read 3 or 4 books at a time. Now I have memory problems due to motherhood, so my mind can only keep track of two at the most.

3. My favorite quality about myself is...

I guess my favorite quality about myself is that I'm creative, and that I notice details. I take pride in a job well done. I think those things wrapped together are my favorite thing about myself.

4. My favorite beauty product is...

I love it when I read about other blogger's favorite products! I have a couple!

I love Mary Kay's eye makeup remover. It works better than any other kind I've tried!

Purpose Cleanser. I really like this face wash! It is cheap, and it does a good job. It is gentle enough that you can use it on your eyes too. It is made by Johnson & Johnson so it has a slight baby shampoo scent to it, which reminds me of my babies, which makes me happy. (Unless they are fighting and or crying while I am trying to take a shower. Then I am not happy.)

5. The song/artist/band I can't get enough of right now is...

I'm not really what I would call a "music person". I like music, but it is not something I really think of all that often. Is that weird? I do listen to music in the car, and I just listen to the regular old radio. I listen to KLOVE most of the time, but I do listen to a couple local country stations too. KLOVE and country. That's about it!

6. The last new recipe I tried was...

I'm trying to incorporate some healthier dishes into my collection, so the last one I tried was quinoa with salsa and beans. It turned out pretty good! (I am trying my best to like quinoa, but the texture is just a little weird to me. I am open to suggestions!)

7. If I could have one superpower it would be...

The power to make decisions. I would be Decisive Girl! Given a variety of choices I could pick one that would be the best without further thought, worry or guilt! You may be laughing, but this would be awesome. Andrew gets it. He wishes I could be Decisive Girl too. Luckily he is Great Listener Husband so he can help me sort out all of my decisions.

8. My favorite holiday is...

Is January a holiday? Or October? Hmmm. I love January and New Years and all of the clean slates and empty calendars. I love October for the beauty and coziness. I guess I didn't really answer the question, but it is my blog and I can do what I want!

Ok, now it is my turn to give out the Liebster award to someone else, and I pick my partner in photo crime, Sarah! Sarah has a photography blog, and you all (all five of you reading) should pop on over there to take a look at her beautiful photos! Sarah, I love having you to bounce photo ideas off of. I love that you can read my mind while we work. Basically photography is a lot more fun with you around!!

I hope you had fun learning a little bit about me. The photos are coming, promise!

so happy

"Im so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."
L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Me too, Anne Shirley. Me too.

I've been busy living and loving October. I plan on getting a post of all the daily photos ready for your viewing pleasure on Monday, but I wanted to share these three with you before then. Cora made a little leaf bouquet, then said to me: "Mommy, would you like for me to stand here with my leaves? What if I close my eyes?" I love that she loves my camera. (Side note: Used to it would totally bother me that Cora has on a bright patterned sweatshirt. I would think: Oh, I love that picture, but her shirt! Now I don't really care what the kids have on in my pictures anymore. Sure, I may try (usually very unsuccessfully) to get the kids all dolled up for pictures, but I so cherish the daily, imperfect pictures of our days. Crazy patterned shirts and all. They are the pictures that always grab my heart.)

Enjoy your October weekend!

so long september

A few photos (and thoughts to go along with them) to bid farewell to September. I loved September!

Sweet Henry. You've met Lora before. I love her. I shot her wedding, and captured her pregnancy. I love her sister, Lindsay. Love love lovey love. So, it was only natural that I loved her new Henry too. I can't wait to edit the rest of his newborn session!
*Thought*: After you have a baby, you feel far from photo ready. I know after I had my babies I really didn't want my picture taken. However, I was so happy that Lora let me take this photo of her and Henry. So beautiful Lora!

We had an auction on Saturday, and one of our regulars happened to have a truck bed full of pumpkins. We bought some, of course. Then we came home, placed them on our porch, and our sweetie pie Coconut chewed them. Mostly just the stems. I knew she would.
*Thought*: If your dog has a track record for chewing things, don't leave things on your porch. I wonder if Pinterest has any awesome ideas on how to make chewed up pumpkins look not so chewed up. Probably making a pie is the best bet.

Sunday was wonderfully rainy. We went to church, then we came home and stayed home. All of us. I loved it.
*Thought*: Rainy days are sometimes the very best days.

The girls like to paint with watercolors. Ada had on a newish outfit, so I was happy I had the forethought to take it of before she painted it.
*Thought*: There isn't much cuter than a baby (toddler!!) in just their diaper.

September was great. Looking forward to October!

spoiled by sun

So, I think my daily photos will definitely take on a more melancholy feel once these beautiful sun drenched evenings dwindle down. This last week has been full of sunlit evenings! Love. I love shooting in the sun. (Photography side note: used to I was pretty terrified of shooting in full sun. If I was going to take photos I wanted clouds. Lots of clouds. I have practiced and now love the bright light and all it brings! Photography in general is overwhelming. There is so much out there to learn, and so many people who do it so well. It is easy to get frustrated, but when I stop and notice these baby steps I am making and learning I feel really happy!)

Indiana Jones made a visit during bath time on Monday. I love this boy in hats!

Another bath time photo. I am really loving this photo for its simplicity. I almost made it black and white, but wanted to keep the pink jammies.

I shall never tire of taking photos of my children in the sandbox, so I hope you never tire of looking at them. (Please avert your eyes from those dying sunflowers in the back. Thanks.)

Ok. So last night was another sun filled beautiful evening. Warm and still. A perfect night to try and coordinate the kids in outfits of some sort and make some early attempts at the Christmas card photos. Mission impossible. There's always tomorrow. Until then here's a photo of Ada, eating an apple in some beautiful light:

I hope you have a light filled weekend!

good afternoon

Happy Monday afternoon to you! I am loving September and all the beautiful days it has brought so far. Pretty blue skies and cooler temperatures. So wonderful!

We tend to play outside after we pick Max up from school. In crazy outfits while our dog eats apples. You know, just a normal day:

The other morning we blew bubbles:

Miss Cora loves to play by herself. When there isn't anyone to bother her, she loves to set up little things for her and her baby doll to do together. I think they were making jewelry here.

On Saturday I photographed another wedding with my friend Sarah! We are on a roll! I am always so drawn to the kids in the wedding party. Loving her chippy nails. So much like my Cora.

Ada makes this face all the time. I think it is her concentration face. Funny!

Enjoy the rest of your Monday!
